Politics, Power and Influence

·                 Wrestling with politics in your organization?

·                 Budgets and head-count shrinking?

·                 Coalitions shifting?

If you said yes to any of these questions, you will want to attend this session.  Professor Shapiro will help you reframe politics as the process by which scarce resources are allocated across competing demands, and strategize how to participate in that process.

You'll participate in an experiential exercise to test out uses of power and influence, and then develop strategies for using both in your own
organizations.

When:  Tuesday, October 27, 2009 from 9am to 1pm (Breakfast provided!)

Presenter:  Mary Shapiro, Associate Professor, Simmons School of Management and Faculty Affiliate, Center for Gender in Organization

About the Presenter: For more than 20 years as a consultant, executive trainer, and faculty member, Professor Shapiro has worked with public and private companies to develop the infrastructure and competencies critical to reaching organizational goals.  Shapiro specializes in four areas: team building and intervention, communicating in a diverse and virtual environment, personal effectiveness in influence and motivation, and strategic career management.

Teaching and Learning Collaborative and Global Education Opportunities Center

The Colleges of the Fenway’s Teaching and Learning Collaborative (TLC), supports and builds on faculty development programs offered by the individual colleges of the six-college consortium and develops new, effective, and innovative opportunities for collaborative faculty development for them.  The goals of the TLC are to: 1) enhance faculty teaching through shared professional development experiences; 2) share expertise to strengthen programs on individual campuses; 3) facilitate support networks across and within institutions; and 4) increase collaborative academic programs and research.

While the content focus of specific initiatives and events varies, all TLC offerings are developed and delivered collaboratively; emphasize the relationship between learning, teaching and scholarship/creative production; result in the implementation of action plans; and encourage small communities of practice and research in areas of faculty interest.  Annual events of the TLC include the Summer Teaching Institute, the Fall New Faculty Reception, the Annual Teaching and Learning Conference, and the Spring Faculty Reception.  A four-course certificate program for Teaching College Effectively with Technology was initiated in summer, 2011.

The grant that funds the TLC was received from the Davis Educatitonal Foundation established by Stanton and Elisabeth Davis after Mr. Davis's retirement as chairman of Shaw's Supermarket, Inc.
